The No. 1 Miami Hurricanes are heading into Chapel Hill on Halloween night for a primetime showdown against the North Carolina Tar Heels. Miami enters the matchup undefeated and with national championship aspirations, but there is something else at stake for Mario Cristobal's team: finally getting the monkey off its back against an opponent that has repeatedly tormented the Hurricanes.
North Carolina has defeated Miami five consecutive times and has won eight of the last 11 meetings between the programs in Chapel Hill. For whatever reason, the Tar Heels have had Miami's number, regardless of rankings, expectations, or which team appeared to have the superior roster. Now, the Hurricanes have an opportunity to reverse that trend and send a message that this year's Miami team is different.
Perhaps no game better illustrates Miami's struggles against North Carolina than the infamous 2020 meeting. The Hurricanes entered that contest ranked in the top 10, only to suffer one of the most humiliating defeats in program history, losing 62-26. North Carolina accumulated an astonishing 778 yards of total offense, the most Miami has ever surrendered in a single game, including 554 rushing yards. Tar Heels running backs Michael Carter and Javonte Williams combined for 544 rushing yards as Miami's defense was completely overwhelmed.
The humiliation extended beyond the scoreboard. North Carolina has never been shy about celebrating its victories over Miami, and the upside-down U has become a familiar sight during this rivalry. Few opponents have seemingly enjoyed mocking the Hurricanes quite like the Tar Heels, making this matchup an opportunity for Miami to reclaim some bragging rights.
Yet, Cristobal is not interested in revenge narratives or looking beyond the opponent in front of him. His message this week has centered on preparation, physicality, discipline, and maintaining the mentality that has carried Miami to the top of the national rankings. So, what are the keys to victory for Miami to survive a road game in Chapel Hill on Halloween?
Keys to Victory for Miami
Stay in Hunting Mode
One of Cristobal's biggest messages this week was that Miami must continue playing like the hunter rather than a team simply trying to protect its No. 1 ranking. The Hurricanes have climbed to the top of college football, but Cristobal understands that maintaining that position requires the same aggression and intensity that helped them get there.
"You've got to stay in that hunting mode. You've got to be on the attack, because the teams we play have really, really good players that can beat you and can beat anybody," Cristobal said.
Miami cannot afford to play conservatively, allow the Tar Heels to hang around, or assume that its superior talent will eventually take over. The Hurricanes need to establish control early, attack on both sides of the football, and maintain their intensity for four quarters.
Win the Battle in the Trenches
Despite North Carolina's challenges this season, Cristobal has been particularly impressed with the Tar Heels' physicality along the line of scrimmage. He made a point of highlighting that strength during his weekly press conference.
"At the line of scrimmage, they're beating up everybody they play. It's easy to see," Cristobal said.
Despite Cristobal's praise for North Carolina's physicality along the line of scrimmage, the Tar Heels have struggled to stop both the run and the pass, ranking 13th in the ACC in rushing defense while surrendering 154.7 yards per game and ninth in passing defense, allowing 218 yards per contest. That presents a favorable matchup for a Miami offense averaging 211.1 rushing yards per game, 18th nationally, and 340.7 passing yards, fourth in the country.
The Hurricanes should be able to establish their running game early, opening opportunities for Darian Mensah and his talented receiving corps. Another area Miami could exploit is third down, where North Carolina ranks 15th in the ACC, allowing opponents to convert 43.1% of their opportunities. Malachi Toney has developed into one of Mensah's most dependable weapons in critical situations, repeatedly coming up with big catches this season but especially against Pitt in key third and long situations.
Eliminate the Unnecessary Penalties
Miami's dominant victory over Pitt was impressive, but it was far from perfect. One of the biggest concerns coming out of that game was the Hurricanes' lack of discipline, particularly the penalties that disrupted their offensive rhythm and gave Pitt unnecessary opportunities. During his Monday appearance on The Joe Rose Show, Cristobal specifically addressed the issue.
"I would say the penalties obviously was something that really stood out. Four pre-snap penalties, which is four too many," Cristobal said.
Miami finished the Pitt game with 10 penalties, an unacceptable number for a team for Cristobal. The Canes have enough talent to overcome mistakes against many opponents, but that is not a habit they want to develop if they want to make another deep playoff run.
Don't Look Ahead to Notre Dame
Maybe the biggest challenge facing Miami this week has nothing to do with North Carolina's personnel or schemes. It is the temptation to look ahead to the Hurricanes' highly anticipated November 7 showdown against Notre Dame. With Miami sitting atop the national rankings and a major matchup against the Fighting Irish approaching, it’s tempting to become distracted by what comes next. Cristobal has consistently emphasized the importance of preparation, focus, and treating every opponent with respect, regardless of its record.
And of all teams, the Tar Heels have been Miami’s Achillies heel in the ACC. They would like nothing more than to take out the Cane as the No.1 team in the nation at their house and throw down the upside down ‘U”. Miami needs to play with a controlled anger, and ultimate focus where they go into Chapel Hill with full concentration in the task at hand.
North Carolina Players to Watch
Safety Greg Smith
One of North Carolina's most important defensive players is 6-foot-4 safety Greg Smith, who has established himself as one of the ACC's better defensive backs. Smith brings an impressive combination of size, physicality, and coverage ability, making him a player Miami must account for when attacking the Tar Heels' secondary.
Smith has recorded 41 tackles, four pass breakups, and three interceptions while earning an impressive 85.6 Pro Football Focus grade. His ability to make plays against both the run and pass makes him a valuable piece of North Carolina's defense. Miami quarterback Darian Mensah will need to be aware of Smith's positioning, particularly when attacking the middle of the field and attempting to create explosive plays downfield.
Tight End Jelani Thurman
Offensively, North Carolina features one of the ACC's more productive tight ends in Jelani Thurman. The talented pass catcher has emerged as a reliable weapon, recording 33 receptions for 391 yards and four touchdowns.
Rollo's Prediction: Miami 38, North Carolina 20
One of the things we have seen with Mario Cristobal is that his teams have gotten better each year as they take on his mentality. The “1-0” mentality is real for this team; they are locked in and unlike teams in the past they are not quitters. This Hurricanesteam has the talent, depth, and experience to finally break the curse and end Carolina’s five game win streak.
I expect North Carolina to come out energized in front of its home crowd, particularly with the nation's No. 1 team visiting on Halloween night. However, Miami's advantages along the line of scrimmage and its collection of offensive weapons led by Mensah and Toney will eventually prove too much.
The biggest question is whether Miami can avoid the penalties and mental mistakes that have occasionally prevented it from playing a complete game. If the Hurricanes execute cleanly early on, there is no reason this game should come down to the final possession.
My prediction is Miami 38, North Carolina 20. The Hurricanes finally end their five-game losing streak against the Tar Heels, improve their undefeated record and become the hunters making Chapel Hill a haunted house where the Tar Heels are the hunted.
