Historic Offensive Start Sends Canes Baseball Climbing in Latest National Polls

The Miami Hurricanes are surging up the national polls after a hot start to the 2026 season, powered by one of the most explosive offenses in college baseball. With a perfect record through the opening stretch, Miami enters the week riding momentum as it prepares for a midweek trip to FAU.

The Hurricanes climbed to No. 17 in the latest D1Baseball Top 25, continuing their steady rise in the national landscape. Miami also moved up to No. 16 in the USA Today Coaches Poll, checked in at No. 21 in the Perfect Game rankings, and remained No. 22 in the Baseball America poll.

Through the first nine games of the season, Miami sits at 9-0 and has been one of the most dangerous offensive teams in the country. The Hurricanes are hitting .379 as a team while piling up 144 runs on 125 hits with 27 home runs. Miami enters the week with a staggering .739 slugging percentage and a .499 on-base percentage, numbers that rank among the best nationally.

The offensive fireworks began immediately on opening weekend when Miami overwhelmed Lehigh in a three-game sweep at Mark Light Field. The Hurricanes scored 57 total runs during the series, establishing a new program record for the most runs ever scored in an opening weekend set.

The historic production continued in the finale of the Lafayette series when Miami launched five home runs in a single inning, setting a new school record for the most long balls in one frame. The previous mark of four home runs had stood for more than four decades, dating back to April 8, 1984 against Alabama.

Several Hurricanes have fueled the offensive spark early in the season.

Freshman catcher Alonzo Alvarez has burst onto the scene, hitting .588 with 10 hits in just seven appearances. Eight of those hits have gone for extra bases, helping him produce a staggering 1.412 slugging percentage.

Senior outfielder Derek Williams has also been one of Miami’s most consistent offensive forces, batting .571 with four home runs, 13 RBI and 18 runs scored while compiling 33 total bases.

NC State transfer Alex Sosa currently leads the team in power production with five home runs and 17 RBI while hitting .382, while Daniel Cuvet has matched the home run total with five of his own to go along with 13 RBI.

Freshman Dylan Dubovik has quickly become one of the most productive bats in the lineup as well. In limited opportunities, Dubovik is hitting an eye-popping .846 with 11 hits in 13 at-bats, including three home runs and 11 RBI.

Miami will look to keep its momentum rolling Wednesday night when the Hurricanes travel to Boca Raton for a 6:30 p.m. matchup against FAU. Freshman right-hander Sebastian Santos-Olson is expected to start for Miami against FAU left-hander Kide Adetuyi.

After the midweek contest, the Hurricanes return to Coral Gables for one of the biggest early-season series in college baseball as Miami hosts No. 10 Florida at Mark Light Field.

The rivalry between the Hurricanes and Gators remains one of the most evenly matched in the sport, with the all-time series deadlocked at 136-136-1 entering the weekend. First pitch for Friday’s opener is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Mark Light Field.
