Miami Dolphins Beat Jets 28-25: Three Major Takeaways

The Miami Dolphins are finally in the win column. After six games without a victory and an offense that had failed to hold a lead at any point this season, Miami delivered its most complete offensive performance of the year in a 28-25 victory over the New York Jets at MetLife Stadium. It wasn't always pretty, particularly during a second half that nearly saw the Dolphins surrender a two-touchdown advantage, but Jeff Hafley's team made enough plays to secure its first victory of the 2026 NFL season.

The Dolphins (1-5) established control early, building a 21-7 halftime lead behind an efficient Malik Willis, a productive rushing attack led by Ollie Gordon II, and a timely defensive interception from rookie Michael Taaffe. Miami outgained New York 231-114 in the first half and controlled possession for more than 21 minutes, a remarkable turnaround for an offense that had struggled with consistency throughout the opening six weeks. Although the Jets (2-5) mounted a second-half comeback, Miami responded with a 63-yard touchdown from rookie Caleb Douglas before converting a critical fourth down to seal the victory.

The win also marked the first NFL head coaching victory for Hafley, who celebrated the occasion just 17 miles from his hometown of Montvale, New Jersey, with family and friends in attendance. More importantly, it offered a glimpse of what Miami's rebuilding roster might become if its young offensive players continue developing. Here are three major takeaways from the Dolphins' first victory of the season.

1. Caleb Douglas Announces His Arrival with Two Touchdowns

The Miami Dolphins may have found an important piece of their receiving corps in rookie Caleb Douglas. The third-round selection out of Texas Tech returned from an ankle injury that had sidelined him since Week 2 and immediately made his presence felt, catching two passes for 70 yards and two touchdowns. Both receptions resulted in the first two touchdowns of his NFL career, including the decisive score late in the fourth quarter that ultimately separated Miami from New York.

Douglas wasted little time making an impact. On Miami's opening possession, Willis found the rookie for a seven-yard touchdown that gave the Dolphins their first lead of the entire season. It was an encouraging moment for an offense that had struggled to establish any early momentum through its first five games. Douglas demonstrated his ability to create separation in scoring situations, giving Willis a reliable target near the goal line and helping Miami establish the aggressive offensive approach that defined its first half.

His second touchdown was even more impressive. With 4:44 remaining and Miami protecting a 21-17 advantage, Douglas caught a pass from Willis and raced 63 yards down the sideline for the score. Former Dolphins safety Minkah Fitzpatrick attempted to force him out of bounds near midfield, but Douglas maintained his balance and tiptoed along the sideline before breaking free. The touchdown extended Miami's lead to 28-17 and ultimately provided the points necessary to survive the Jets' late comeback.

2. Malik Willis Delivers His Best Performance as Miami's Quarterback

For the first time this season, Malik Willis looked like a quarterback capable of consistently directing Miami's offense. The fifth-year veteran delivered his best performance in a Dolphins uniform, completing 14 of 21 passes for 208 yards, two touchdowns, and an impressive 130.7 passer rating. He also contributed 37 rushing yards on eight carries and added a rushing touchdown, finishing with three total scores while avoiding the costly turnovers that had undermined his previous performances.

Willis was particularly sharp during the first half, completing 10 of 13 attempts for 128 yards and helping Miami build a 21-7 advantage. He operated decisively from the pocket, benefited from improved pass protection, and made effective use of his mobility when plays broke down. Rather than relying exclusively on his athleticism, Willis showed improved judgment about when to deliver the football and when to extend plays with his legs. That balance made Miami's offense considerably more difficult to defend.

Perhaps the most important development was his ball security. Willis entered the contest having thrown four interceptions and recorded five fumbles, mistakes that had repeatedly placed Miami in difficult situations. Against New York, the Dolphins did not commit a single turnover. Willis also absorbed just two sacks, both coming in the second half, as the offensive line provided him with enough time to work through his progressions and attack the Jets' secondary. His ability to protect the football while still generating explosive plays was a significant step forward.

There are still legitimate questions about whether Willis can develop into Miami's long-term answer at quarterback. One productive afternoon does not erase the inconsistency of the previous five games, and the offense struggled considerably after halftime, punting on its first three possessions of the third and fourth quarters. Nevertheless, Willis showed meaningful improvement in decision-making, accuracy, and command of the offense. If he can build on this performance, Miami will have a much clearer picture of what it possesses at the position heading into the offseason.

3. Ollie Gordon II Continues to Establish Himself as Miami's Running Back of the Future

While Willis and Douglas supplied the explosive plays, Ollie Gordon II provided the foundation for Miami's offensive success. The second-year running back delivered the best rushing performance of his NFL career, carrying the football 25 times for 103 yards and a touchdown. With De'Von Achane sidelined for the remainder of the season by an ACL injury, Gordon has taken advantage of his expanded opportunity and is increasingly establishing himself as a significant part of Miami's offensive future.

Gordon's importance extended well beyond his final rushing total. His ability to consistently gain positive yardage helped Miami maintain offensive balance and prevented the Jets from concentrating exclusively on Willis. The Dolphins' commitment to the running game was particularly effective during the first half, when Miami controlled possession and repeatedly sustained drives. Gordon's one-yard touchdown run on fourth down late in the opening quarter restored Miami's lead at 14-7, an advantage the Dolphins would never relinquish.

The touchdown also continued an impressive scoring streak for Gordon, who has now reached the end zone in four consecutive games. His production has become increasingly important for a team that entered the season with considerable uncertainty surrounding its offensive identity. Although his 103 yards came on 25 attempts, an average of 4.1 yards per carry, Gordon demonstrated the patience and physicality necessary to handle a substantial workload. His ability to contribute in short-yardage situations also gives Miami an element that can complement Willis' mobility.

Perhaps the biggest takeaway from Gordon's performance is that Miami's rebuilding process is beginning to reveal some promising young talent. Gordon and Douglas provide the Dolphins with two offensive players capable of becoming meaningful contributors beyond this season.

A Win That Offers Hope, but Plenty of Work Remains

The Dolphins deserved their first victory, but the narrow final score also revealed why this team remains a work in progress. Miami's offense was excellent during the first half before struggling to sustain drives after intermission, while the defense allowed Jets running back Braelon Allen to rush for 104 yards on 17 carries. Those shortcomings nearly erased what should have been a comfortable victory.

Miami returns home on November 1 to face the New England Patriots in another AFC East matchup. One victory will not transform the Dolphins into contenders overnight, but after an 0-5 start, the performance against the Jets finally gave this team something tangible to build upon.
