Miami freshman wide receiver Somourian Wingo can sometimes be overlooked due to how much depth the Hurricanes have with experienced players at his position.

Wingo, along with rookie offensive lineman Jackson Cantwell, were named by the Maxwell Club to the Shaun Alexander freshman of the year watch list.
Wingo has consistently flashed in practice since arriving at The U in January. He continues to compete for playing time with the likes of sophomores Daylyn Upshaw and Josh Moore, along with South Carolina transfer Vandrevius Jacobs. Wingo is holding his own. As a freshman, you can expect rapid improvement. If his number isn't called at the beginning of the season, his opportunity could arrive down the stretch.
Head coach Mario Cristobal has not hesitated to play true freshmen if they earn it.
Cantwell was a more obvious (and correct) choice for this watch list, so the fact that the committee has taken notice of Wingo comes as a pleasant surprise to me.
As a senior at St. Augustine HS, Wingo recorded 46 receptions for 847 yards and 13 touchdowns.
Cantwell is very much in play for a starting guard spot this season. He earned Gatorade National Player of the Year honors in 2025, marking the first time an offensive lineman ever won that award.
Malachi Toney earned several freshman honors in 2025, but the Alexander Award eluded him. It was instead given to redshirt freshman Ohio State quarterback Julian Sayin.
No Hurricane has ever won this award. Will Cantwell or Wingo become the first?
