The Stanford Cardinal will have their work cut out for them when the Miami Hurricanes visit on September 4th.
Let me be clear: Miami shouldn't need any extra advantages against the team picked to finish last in the ACC this year. Miami has more talent on their bench than Stanford will have on their starting lineup.
With that said, I believe the timing of the game gives Mario Cristobal's team an extra edge.
The trip to Palo Alto will be Miami's season opener. Stanford, meanwhile, opens their season six days prior at home against Hawaii. Could Miami be the rustier team? Maybe, but I believe the benefits outweigh that risk.
Over this past weekend, the Hurricanes shifted their focus from training camp over to game one prep. That means Miami has two weeks to focus on a Stanford specific game plan, while the Cardinal have to prepare for Hawaii first.
And it's not like Stanford can afford to be ultra-conservative against the Rainbow Warriors and save their best plays for the Canes. Hawaii beat them last year, and the spread is within a touchdown, with Stanford favored by five and a half. That game is likely to be close, meaning Stanford could very well need to open up their playbook.
That means Miami will have film on Stanford, which is valuable given the fact that they have a new coach and a new quarterback.
Davis Warren is the new QB1 for Stanford. He's a former Michigan starter, which sounds glamorous, until you read the fine print. As a Wolverine in 2024, Warren threw for 1,199 yards, 7 touchdowns and 9 interceptions. Not good. Plus, Warren missed the entire 2025 season with an ACL injury. August 29th against Hawaii will mark his first competitive action in nearly 20 months.
He can get his feet wet against Hawaii, yes, but then he'll have a short week to prepare for Miami's vaunted defense.
The Hurricanes are favored by 23 and a half, but this one could get even uglier than that.
