The Florida Panthers saw their three-game winning streak come to an end Monday night, falling 5-3 to the Detroit Red Wings at Amerant Bank Arena. Despite generating more scoring chances, Florida struggled to capitalize on its opportunities while Detroit took advantage of several defensive breakdowns. The loss dropped the Panthers to 8-5-2 as they continue navigating a competitive Atlantic Division.
“I think that was a really strong game by Detroit,” head coach Paul Maurice said. “I wasn't in love with ours.”
Here are three takeaways from Florida's disappointing loss.
Florida's Defensive Execution Falters
The Panthers entered Monday riding a three-game winning streak, but their defensive execution left plenty to be desired against Detroit. Florida surrendered two goals in the opening three minutes of the third period, turning a 2-2 tie into a 4-2 deficit. Justin Faulk scored on the power play at 2:08 before Michael Brandsegg-Nygård added another goal just 45 seconds later. Those two goals ultimately proved to be the difference.
What made it more frustrating was Florida's statistical advantage. The Panthers led 43-23 in scoring chances and 4.58-3.96 in expected goals, according to Natural Stat Trick. Yet Detroit was far more opportunistic when its chances presented themselves.Maurice acknowledged his team's offensive struggles afterward.
“There's not easy puck movement for us right now,” Maurice said. “We're just slow with some things.”
Jacob Markstrom Returns
One positive development was the return of goaltender Jacob Markstrom, who made his first appearance since October 17 after recovering from an upper-body injury. Markstrom finished with 24 saves, including six during Detroit power plays in the second period. His performance helped keep Florida competitive despite the Red Wings' ability to capitalize on their scoring opportunities.
The veteran acknowledged that returning after an extended absence presented challenges.
“When you don't play for a bit, it's a little tougher,” Markstrom said. “But, you know, body feels good and it was fun to get back there. I wish the result was a little different.”
Although the result was disappointing, having Markstrom healthy again provides Florida with additional stability in the net. Akira Schmid performed admirably during his absence, giving Maurice two goaltenders capable of contributing as the season progresses.
Florida's Veterans Continue Producing Despite the Loss
Despite the defeat, several Panthers continued their impressive offensive starts. Sam Reinhart scored Florida's opening goal, extending his goal-scoring streak to three games and his point streak to four. Aaron Ekblad added a shorthanded goal in the second period, the third of his NHL career, while Sam Bennett scored late to briefly bring Florida within one. MatthewTkachuk also continued his remarkable consistency, recording an assist on Bennett's goal. He has now registered at least one point in 12 of his last 14 games.
Those individual performances provide encouragement, but Florida needs more consistent contributions throughout its lineup. The Panthers now sit at 8-5-2 in an increasingly competitive Atlantic Division. With their winning streak snapped, Maurice's team must improve its defensive execution and capitalize on scoring chances to regain momentum.
