Miami vs. Pittsburgh Preview: Key Matchups

Riding the emotional high of its double-overtime victory over rival Florida State last weekend, No. 1 Miami will continue its two-game homestand with a noon bout against Pittsburgh on Saturday.

Here are the three matchups to watch out for between the Hurricanes and the Panthers.

Miami’s run offense vs. Pittsburgh’s run defense

Before starting quarterback Mason Heintschel’s season-ending injury in Week 5 (more on the Pitt QB situation later), the Panthers jumped out to a 5-0 start to begin the year, thanks in part to their stout run defense.

Entering Week 8, Pitt allows the fewest rushing yards per game (57.3) in the country. Leading tackler and starting defense back Cruce Brookins and junior linebacker Jeremiah Marcelin – a South Florida native – have led this impressive defensive effort.

This will be a measuring stick game for UM’s rushing attack, which ran for 257 yards against the Seminoles and ranks 13th nationally in rushing yards per game.

“They’re violent, if I had to explain them in one word,” Miami offensive coordinator Shannon Dawson said. “They’re very sound … and they’re very disciplined. And their d-line, they remind me a lot of what I go against every day on Greentree.

“Their d-line gets after it. They strain. Their linebackers trigger. Their safeties are downhill.”

Miami’s secondary vs. Holden Geriner/Corey Dailey

This could be a get-right game for the Hurricanes’ secondary. The Panthers have struggled to throw the ball since Heintschel’s season-ending injury, with backup quarterbacks Holden Geriner and Corey Dailey each struggling in their respective starts.

As of Thursday morning, Pitt head coach Pat Narduzzi has yet to name a starting QB for the Miami game.

“We’re going to look at the week’s work and probably put someone with the first team this week and see how it goes, and we’ll just adjust it as we go,” Narduzzi said to reporters. “Find out how they practice, how they prepare and who gives us the best chance to win a football game.

Against FSU, Miami forced Daniels into a low completion percentage (53.6%), but he still sprayed the ball downfield to the tune of 298 yards and four touchdowns. The Canes rank 90th in the nation in passing yards allowed per game (223.3).

Mario Cristobal vs. Pat Narduzzi

While a matchup between two seasoned head coaches is always one to watch out for, this particular matchup has some extra juice because of Narduzzi’s press-conference comments earlier this week.

When asked about Miami’s reported pursuit of Heintschel this past offseason, Narduzzi replied that, “If the NCAA can’t get a hold on it and Congress can’t get a hold on it, there’s nothing you can do. He’s playing by his rules, and we’ll try to play by our rules.”

Narduzzi also mentioned that he and Cristobal spoke to each other at the 2026 ACC Kickoff in July.

At ACC Kickoff, Narduzzi revealed that Miami had tried to acquire Heintschel during the offseason before it turned its attention toward former Duke QB Darian Mensah.

“Miami tried to get Mason Thursday … we were able to hang on to him and shut them down,” Narduzzi told The Athletic. “Shoot, I talked to [Duke head coach Manny Diaz] that Thursday afternoon and said, ‘Hey, watch out. I hear he’s going for your guy next.’ And sure enough, they stole him.”

Cristobal has addressed Narduzzi’s comments with the media. We’ll see if he has an on-field answer on Saturday.
