Running Back Outlook Ahead of the 2026 Season

We’re back with our running back edition of the Outlook Ahead of the 2026 Season series.

Continuing our offseason series at CanesWear during the gap between the end of spring practice and the beginning of fall camp, we’re taking a look at each position group and where things stand for the Miami Hurricanes heading into the 2026 season under Mario Cristobal

If you missed the quarterback rundown, you can check that out here:

Along the way, we’ll also be rolling out early opponent outlooks based on feedback from all 12 regular-season opponents, a weekly Q&A session, and additional offseason coverage

At running back, we were able to see a room that is deep but also diverse in skill sets, with the potential for a big bounce-back season from one running back among the group. The Hurricanes were able to retain all four main contributors from the 2026 season in their backfield: Mark Fletcher Jr., Char’Mar Brown, Girard Pringle Jr., and Jordan Lyle, to the surprise of many. Chris Wheatley-Humphrey also returned to the program, and true freshman Javian Mallory took in his first spring with the program.

The leader of the pack has been well established with the performance from returning senior Mark Fletcher Jr. during Miami’s playoff run, as he set a brand-new College Football Playoff record with 507 rushing yards and the longest rushing touchdown in a national championship game with a 57-yarder. Fletcher, as expected, was in great shape when spring opened up and does what everyone expects at this point. He’s viewed as one of the main leaders of the team by coaches and peers, and the only question that comes into play is how much Miami plans to lean on him and balance workload among what could be another long season, with a return to the playoffs being an obvious goal. Fletcher still remains one of the five best running backs returning to college football this season, and there’s not a question of what he can do, but how much Miami can prepare the others in the room to form a strong committee. He was on a limited snap count during the spring game, as the Hurricanes took that approach with other key players, including Malachi Toney and Damon Wilson, as there was no need for them to prove more or their standing on the team.

The next spot in that rotation, which lands after Fletcher, will be quite the competition that can carry through fall camp. Returning junior Jordan Lyle had a very good spring. He played with confidence and has found his footing once again in the room after coming off a high ankle injury he never really got right from during the 2025 season. I know that some fans have divided opinions on Lyle, but I do think it’s important…
