Messi and Suárez Turn Back the Clock as Inter Miami Crushes D.C. United 4-0

Inter Miami delivered one of its most impressive performances of the season Saturday night, cruising to a dominant 4-0 victory over D.C. United behind vintage performances from Lionel Messi and Luis Suárez. The two former Barcelona superstars combined for all four goals, reminding the rest of Major League Soccer that they remain one of the most dangerous attacking duos in the league.

The victory earned Miami three crucial points and moved the Herons into sole possession of second place in the Eastern Conference, behind Nashville SC, as the race for playoff positioning intensifies.

1. Lionel Messi Continues to Defy Father Time

At this point, Lionel Messi isn't just turning back the clock. He's making a mockery of it.

The Argentine superstar extended his remarkable scoring streak to six consecutive matches, recording another brace against D.C. United and bringing his 2026 totals to 23 MLS goals, 27 club goals, and 38 goals across all competitions.

Messi was sensational throughout the evening, finishing with eight shots, four on target, and two goals. His underlying numbers were equally impressive, generating 0.94 expected goals (xG) and 1.96 expected goals on target (xGOT). He also completed two of four dribble attempts and recorded 22 ball carries, including 12 progressive carries.

His performance earned him a perfect 10.0 SofaScore rating, another addition to an extraordinary statistical résumé.

Since the 2009–10 season, Messi has now recorded 131 matches with a perfect 10.0 rating on SofaScore. For perspective, Cristiano Ronaldo ranks second with 38 such performances.

Even more remarkable is Messi's consistency. The eight-time Ballon d'Or winner has now registered at least one goal contribution in 12 consecutive matches, producing 13 goals and seven assists during that stretch.

With his latest brace, Messi also reached 934 career goals, moving within just 66 goals of the historic 1,000-goal milestone.

For a player who has already accomplished virtually everything imaginable in football, Messi continues to perform at an astonishing level. His creativity, finishing, and ability to dictate matches remain world-class, and his recent form suggests he has no intention of slowing down.

2. Luis Suárez Delivers a Vintage Performance

Messi wasn't the only Inter Miami legend turning back the clock Saturday night.

Luis Suárez delivered arguably one of his finest performances of the season, scoring twice and adding an assist in a commanding display that earned him Player of the Match honors.

The Uruguayan striker was clinical in front of goal, generating 1.30 expected goals (xG) and an impressive 2.43 expected goals on target (xGOT). He also created three key passes, demonstrating that his ability to influence matches extends well beyond scoring.

One of the evening's highlights came when Suárez assisted Messi's opening goal, providing another reminder of the chemistry that made the duo one of the most feared attacking partnerships in world football during their years together at Barcelona.

Although both players are now in the later stages of their careers, their understanding of each other's movements remains exceptional. Their combination play, intelligent positioning, and ruthless finishing were simply too much for D.C. United to handle.

Suárez's resurgence could prove particularly important for Inter Miami as the postseason approaches. When Messi and Suárez are both performing at this level, Miami possesses an attacking combination capable of dismantling virtually any defense in MLS.

3. Dayne St. Clair Responds With a Much-Needed Clean Sheet

While Messi and Suárez understandably dominated the headlines, Inter Miami also received an encouraging performance at the opposite end of the pitch.

Goalkeeper Dayne St. Clair, who has endured his share of struggles this season, recorded a much-needed clean sheet as Miami shut out D.C. United.

For a team with championship aspirations, defensive consistency will be just as important as offensive firepower. Miami has demonstrated throughout the season that it can score goals against almost anyone, but maintaining defensive discipline will be essential if the club hopes to make a deep postseason run.

St. Clair's performance provided a welcome confidence boost, and the goalkeeper made it clear afterward that Miami remains determined to challenge Nashville for the top spot in the Eastern Conference.

"We know we're not mathematically out yet. Obviously it's going to be difficult but we want to push until the end. You could potentially host MLS Cup if you win east."

His comments reflect the mentality within the Inter Miami locker room. Despite the challenges of chasing Nashville, the Herons remain focused on finishing the regular season as strongly as possible and securing a favorable position for the playoffs.

Inter Miami Sends a Statement as the Playoffs Approach

Saturday night's emphatic victory was about more than three points.

Inter Miami demonstrated what makes this team such a dangerous opponent when its biggest stars are firing on all cylinders. Messi continues to produce extraordinary performances, Suárez has rediscovered his clinical finishing touch, and the defense delivered a clean sheet at a critical stage of the season.

With the 4-0 victory, Miami moved into sole possession of second place in the Eastern Conference, keeping the pressure on Nashville and strengthening its position in the playoff race.

Perhaps most importantly, the Herons are building momentum at precisely the right time.

If Messi and Suárez continue producing performances like Saturday night's, Inter Miami will enter the postseason with every reason to believe it can compete for another MLS Cup championship.
