Miami has become a destination in the Transfer Portal for top signal callers. In 2024, Cam Ward elevated his NFL Draft stock to number one overall while leading the Hurricanes to ten wins. Last season, Carson Beck helped the Canes reach the National Championship game while raising his stock into the third round.
This year, Mario Cristobal will try to go three for three with former Duke Blue Devil Darian Mensah.
Miami’s portal-heavy approach at football’s most important position has created debate and dispute among fans. The skeptics will ask questions like, “Is it sustainable to gamble on finding the right QB in the portal every year?” or, “If you keep taking quarterbacks from other schools, will high school recruits shy away from you in recruiting?”
Others will say things like, “Keep doing what you’re doing, because high school quarterbacks are too much of a gamble when you compare them to established products who have already developed in college.” Or, “Established quarterbacks are a smarter financial investment of NIL funds over non-proven commodities.”
The debates have been fun, but Cristobal just ended them by offering his plan for 2027.
“We finally feel our quarterback room and its supporting cast is ready to roll,” said Cristobal at ACC Kickoff Media Days. “So at this time next year, we don’t have to go to the portal. We’re good with our high school recruits, the way they’re developing, and what’s coming in. Throughout the last three years, we’ve had to go and pluck certain parts of our team out of the portal because we weren’t quite there.”
This should make every Miami fan feel good about what they have in their quarterback room.
Current backup quarterbacks Luke Nickel, Judd Anderson, and Dereon Coleman will learn behind Mensah this season. Our hope is that they'll have opportunities to get into some of Miami’s games when the score isn’t close. The Canes will be favored by double digits for the majority of their schedule.
Nickel, Coleman, and Anderson will all be eligible to return in 2027 and will be joined by five-star prospect Israel Abrams. The Chicago Montini Catholic standout is verbally committed to Miami for the Class of ’27. He will have the opportunity to compete with Nickel, Coleman, and Anderson next year.
Nickel and Coleman are former four-star recruits. Anderson was a three-star and is entering his third season in Shannon Dawson’s offense. Miami also has verbal commitments lined up for three-star Jacksonville Mandarin QB Knox Annis in 2028 and top QB CJ Cypher out of Carrollton, GA, for 2029. Stars have not been assigned yet for ’29, but Cypher is projected to receive a five-star grade. Cypher has also been rumored to potentially reclassify into 2028.
This is the brightest quarterback outlook I’ve seen for Miami in many years. Ironically enough, heavy use of the portal for three years has helped the Hurricanes improve their high school recruiting at that position. It’s a win-win.
Cam Ward showed the world in 2024 that a quarterback can put up video game numbers and thrive in Shannon Dawson’s offense on a Mario Cristobal-coached team. Cristobal had a reputation for not being a quarterback-friendly coach. That narrative has since been demolished.
Mensah told me that the success he saw from Ward and Beck at Miami played a major factor in him wanting to leave Duke for the Hurricanes. Miami’s high school recruits cite the success Ward and Beck had as to why they feel Miami can give them the right platform to showcase their skills.
The future is bright.
