Brady Tkachuk is beginning to show exactly why the Florida Panthers made him one of their biggest offseason acquisitions. After a relatively quiet start to his tenure in South Florida, Tkachuk has taken over the Panthers' last two games, scoring six goals in consecutive hat-trick performances and helping Florida secure two important victories. Thursday night against the Vancouver Canucks might have been his most impressive performance yet.
Trailing 2-0 with less than nine minutes remaining in regulation, the Panthers appeared headed for another frustrating defeat. Despite controlling much of the game and generating numerous scoring opportunities, Florida had been unable to solve Vancouver goaltender Leevi Merilainen. That changed when Tkachuk took matters into his own hands.
The 27-year-old winger scored three unanswered goals, including the tying goal with just 13 seconds remaining in regulation and the game-winner 2:23 into overtime, to give the Panthers a 3-2 victory at Amerant Bank Arena. The victory improved Florida's record to 4-2-2 and provided another indication that Tkachuk is finding his place within Paul Maurice's system.
Panthers Dominate Possession but Fall Behind Early
For much of Thursday's contest, the Panthers were the better team without having much to show for it. Vancouver opened the scoring at 7:23 of the first period when Liam Ohgren capitalized on a failed Florida clearing attempt. Linus Karlsson found Ohgren near the right face-off circle, where he beat Akira Schmid to give the Canucks an early 1-0 advantage. The visitors doubled their lead later in the period when Elias Pettersson scored during four-on-four play, taking a pass from Filip Chytil and beating Schmid from the low slot.
Despite the two-goal deficit, Florida continued generating scoring chances and applying pressure in Vancouver's defensive zone .The Panthers eventually finished with 39 shots on goal, compared to just 17 for the Canucks, but Merilainen'sperformance kept Vancouver in control for most of the evening.
Florida also struggled to capitalize on its offensive opportunities, particularly on the power play, which had been productive over the previous two games. With the Panthers already dealing with significant injuries to Aleksander Barkov and Brad Marchand, another home loss would have represented a missed opportunity against a Vancouver team that entered the evening struggling to find consistency.Instead, Tkachuk changed the outcome almost single-handedly.
Brady Tkachuk Takes Over the Third Period
With 8:49 remaining in regulation, Tkachuk finally broke through. Taking a pass from Aaron Ekblad, he fired a wrist shot from above the right face-off circle that beat Merilainen and cut Vancouver's lead to 2-1. It was Florida's 32nd shot of the game and the first indication that the Panthers' sustained offensive pressure might finally produce a result. Vancouver continued to protect its one-goal advantage as the final minutes ticked away, but Florida refused to concede.
With Schmid pulled for an extra attacker and just 13 seconds remaining, Carter Verhaeghe found Tkachuk near the right circle. Tkachuk delivered a one-timer that struck the far post and went into the net, tying the game at two.The goal sent the game into overtime and ensured Florida would leave the evening with at least one point.
But Tkachuk wasn't finished.
At 2:23 of overtime, he created space with a toe-drag move against a Vancouver defender before firing a wrist shot past Merilainen to complete his second consecutive hat trick and secure the victory. It was an individual performance that reflected both his finishing ability and his willingness to take responsibility in critical moments.
"Those guys who have had great success in their career in big moments can feel it, and they want it," Maurice said afterward.
Defenseman Seth Jones, who assisted on Florida's final two goals, also emphasized that Tkachuk's contributions extend beyond his scoring.
"He's a true gamer," Jones said. "He's scoring right now, but he impacts the game in so many ways with his physicality and tenacity around the net."
Tkachuk Brothers Are Developing Into a Major Offensive Weapon
Maybe the most encouraging development for Florida has been the growing chemistry between Brady and his older brother, Matthew. The Panthers acquired Brady from the Ottawa Senators during the offseason with the expectation that he would provide another physical presence and offensive weapon to an already talented roster. But, his first six games produced just one assist and no goals, raising questions about how quickly he would adjust to his new surroundings. Those concerns have disappeared over the last two games.
On Tuesday against Columbus, Brady scored a natural hat trick in a 7-3 victory, with Matthew assisting on all three goals. It was the first time in NHL history that a player had assisted on every goal of his brother's natural hat trick. The brothers combined for nine points in that contest, becoming the first pair of brothers playing as teammates to accomplish that feat since Henrik and Daniel Sedin in 2015. Thursday's performance offered further evidence that their chemistry is developing rapidly. Brady now has six goals and one assist over his last two games after recording just one point in his first six appearances.
Matthew, meanwhile, has extended his point streak to seven games, collecting 11 points during that stretch, including three goals and eight assists. The decision to use the brothers together alongside Sam Bennett has also provided Florida with an intriguing combination of skill, physicality and offensive creativity. All three players are comfortable engaging physically, creating opportunities around the net and making life difficult for opposing defenders.
For Maurice, the challenge moving forward will be maintaining that production while ensuring the Panthers continue receiving balanced contributions throughout the lineup.
Tkachuk Joins Exclusive Panthers Company
Thursday's hat trick also placed Brady Tkachuk in a small group of players in Florida Panthers history. He became just the third player in franchise history to record hat tricks in consecutive games, joining Pavel Bure in 2001 and Noel Acciari in 2019. He also became the first NHL player to accomplish the feat since Auston Matthews recorded consecutive hat tricks for the Toronto Maple Leafs in February 2024. Tkachuk also joined Aleksander Barkov as the only players in Panthers history to complete a hat trick with an overtime-winning goal.
Those accomplishments are particularly notable considering that Tkachuk has played only eight games with Florida. After going scoreless through his first six appearances, he now leads the Panthers with six goals. Still, Tkachuk made it clear afterward that his priorities extend beyond individual accomplishments.
"My goal here is to do something special," Tkachuk said. "It's not about the individual stuff. This is great, but there are bigger goals out there not just for myself, but what this group has as well."
Florida Needs This Version of Tkachuk Moving Forward
The timing of Tkachuk's emergence could hardly be more important for the Panthers. Florida is currently navigating the absence of two important forwards in Barkov and Marchand, both of whom are expected to miss several more weeks.Replacing their production and overall impact will require contributions from multiple players, but Tkachuk's recent performances have helped offset some of those losses.
More importantly, his success gives Maurice another legitimate offensive threat capable of changing a game without relying exclusively on Florida's established stars .The Panthers have built their identity around physical hockey, disciplined defensive play and an ability to perform under pressure. Tkachuk's combination of size, aggressiveness and offensive instincts fits naturally into that approach.
There will inevitably be nights when the goals are harder to come by, and six goals in two games is not a sustainable scoring pace. But Florida does not need Tkachuk to produce hat tricks every night to justify his acquisition.
What the Panthers need is a player who can consistently generate chances, create space for his teammates and deliver in important situations. Over the last two games, Tkachuk has demonstrated his ability to do all three. Florida will look to build on its recent success when it hosts the Seattle Kraken on Saturday at 6 p.m.
So far, the Panthers have won two consecutive games, their newest star has found his scoring touch, and the Tkachuk brothers are beginning to establish themselves as one of the team's most important offensive combinations.
